So far for nothing

So far for nothing

Do you remember the carnival,

The Ferris wheel ride
That cost eleven dollars,
And we still didn’t touch the moon?
It was the same whitelight night
On that third Thursday in June,
When we met new lovers
And dreamed of sex
With each other
Even though we knew,
Knew then and back then, before
The night began
That we, what playground children
Call you + me
Carved into a heart
Permanent in the bark of a pine tree
Was over, glass slipper
On a fat foot past midnight.
The story is never ever after the ending,
Happy. But a cruel beginning
With a worse end
For two best friends.
